Treatment of leukoplakia: conservative, medication and surgery

The basis of treatment is to prevent leukoplakia from becoming cancer.

Conservative treatment consists of limiting the possible cause of leukoplakia and administering medication.

For yeast or viral infections, antifungal and antiviral treatment is given.

It is believed that by curing the infection taking place in the body, subsequent spontaneous healing of the affected area is possible.

In the case of pressure from dentures, implants or broken teeth that irritate the mucosa, the cause must be removed.

It is recommended

  • Stop smoking, chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol
  • Increase the intake of fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Taking retinoids, products containing retinoic acid, which are prescription only and not intended for long-term use
  • Dietary supplements with vitamin A and beta-carotene taken orally to help remove stains

Surgical treatment is mainly used for any kind of erythroplakia.

Surgical removal of the spots does not preclude their return. They return in 10-20% of cases. The probability of developing cancer at the site of the lesion is 3-12%.

Removal of lesions can also be done by laser.

Other treatment options are as follows:

Photodynamic therapy - application of light-activated drugs.

Cryotherapy - freezing of the lesions.

Electrocautery, in which an electrically heated needle is used to remove the lesions.

Folk treatment

Drinking tea or gargling herbal tea decoctions is recommended to treat leukoplakia.

To rinse the oral cavity, you can use a decoction of chamomile, linden, calendula, horsetail or St. John's wort.

What is the prognosis for leukoplakia?

When leukoplakia is present, the doctor monitors the condition of the lesions every three to six months to observe changes and take a biopsy of the tissue for analysis.

After surgical removal, it is recommended to see a doctor for follow-up at least once a year. If the treated sites have not changed for more than 3 years, there is no need to monitor them further, only if the lesions worsen and new ones grow.
