Treatment options for prostatitis: drugs, antibiotics, surgery?
The specific method of treatment depends on the cause of the inflammation. Treatment consists of eliminating the cause and eliminating the undesirable clinical symptoms.
Treatment can be conservative, pharmacological and surgical. In most cases of prostatitis, it is a combination of pharmacotherapy and lifestyle modification.
Conservative treatment and lifestyle modification
In prostatitis, in addition to specialist treatment, the patient should also focus on improving lifestyle. Drinking enough pure water or herbal teas is important. A drinking regime promotes regular and healthy elimination.
In particular, alcohol and other irritating drinks or foods (spicy, spicy) should be avoided. The patient should avoid long cycling.
The prostate as a sexual organ is closely related to the excretory system, and therefore its inflammation manifests itself as a problem with urination. The basis of conservative treatment is not to withhold urination and to urinate regularly during the day.
Before going to bed, it is advisable to drink less fluid and urinate so that no excess urine remains in the bladder.
Pharmacological treatment
The main form of treatment is drug therapy, especially for inflammatory (bacterial) acute and chronic prostatitis.
Antibiotic treatment with oral administration is used. Topical drugs in the form of creams and ointments may also be indicated. Symptomatic treatment, i.e. non-steroidal drugs reducing pain and the inflammatory process, is common.
The urologist may prescribe drugs to slow the growth of the prostate, to promote regular urination or spasmolytics to relax the muscles.
Alpha blockers are a possible medication to help relax the bladder and relieve the patient from the sensation of painful urination.
The type of medication chosen depends on the exact cause of prostatitis.
Surgical treatment
Prostatitis is quite a serious disease because not treating it can affect a man's fertility itself.
As a last resort, surgical treatment may be indicated in some cases. This method is chosen if the patient does not respond positively to conservative and pharmacological treatment.
Surgical treatment is mainly applied in the case of chronic prostatitis, most often due to its excessive enlargement (hyperplasia) or frequently recurring inflammation.
In this case, it is necessary to remove some of the unwanted prostate tissue and to clear the urethra. Endoscopic surgery, called transurethral resection of the prostate, is possible.
