Scoliosis treatment: medication, rehabilitation + brace/support
Treatment is based on an overall assessment of the scoliosis and associated or underlying conditions. And this is based on the evaluated curve, angles, age of the child.
Therapeutic procedure based on the determination of the Cobb angle:
- monitoring and rehabilitation treatment for curves up to 20 degrees
- conservative treatment, at a curve of 20-40 degrees
- surgical treatment above 40 degrees of curve
As can be seen, so the therapy is divided into conservative and surgical methods.
The conservative approach involves rehabilitation.
Its task is to strengthen the muscles of the back, abdomen, pelvis, or core. This in turn has an impact on the acquisition of habits of correct posture and movement patterns. Weak and shortened muscles must be strengthened and stretched.
Breathing exercises also play an important role.
Thus, it is therapeutic physical training, therapeutic physical training. In children, it is necessary to avoid risk factors, peak sports, sports that unilaterally overload the spine.
Suitable are activities such as swimming, gymnastics, yoga, strengthening with own weight, SM system, football, karate and sports that evenly develop muscles and musculoskeletal system in general.
The corset, bracing, is used in the case of a curve from 20 to 40 degrees. Its role is to limit the worsening of the buckling during the growth period. However, the disadvantage of this method is the form of the corset.
It is a combination plastic aid that should be worn by the child for a substantial part of the day. This has a significant impact on the social and aesthetic conditions and traumatisation of the child.
In case of a curve higher than 40 degrees, a surgical solution is indicated. This is the case even if the conservative approach fails.
The aim is to prevent the progression and partial correction of the curve and to restore the balance of the spine in the proportions of the cervical, thoracic and cervical spine, shoulders and pelvis.
The surgical approach and form is chosen based on several factors, age and the form of scoliosis.
Spinal implants and various surgical methods are used.Examples include implants that provide a solid spinal structure for 12 to 24 months, the "growing rods" technique, and others.
Prevention of spinal problems and scoliosis
In the case of scoliosis, incorrect posture has a negative impact, so it is necessary to start at a young age to learn the correct posture and sitting position. Regular exercise, correct footwear and avoiding overloading the spine are important.
This involves the aforementioned selection of appropriate sporting activities. Swimming, walking and being in the fresh air are recommended.
