Treatment of rheumatic fever: medications, antibiotics
Thorough and sufficient treatment of the underlying disease caused by streptococcal infection is very important.
This will prevent the development of complications such as rheumatic fever. The disease is treated with penicillin (antibiotic). If the patient is allergic to penicillin, macrolides are used.
In the case of treatment of rheumatic fever itself, bed rest and restricting physical and mental stress as well as regimental measures are required. Others depend on the associated symptoms, and therefore on what the disease has affected. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs work well for joint problems.
Corticosteroids can also be used in the treatment of cardiac complications, of course, important are the symptoms, the treatment of which is diverse. In case of neurological problems, bed rest and avoidance of stress are sufficient.
Anticonvulsants (anti-sezure medications) are given in case of long-term problems, but their effect is individual.
If the patient has a fever, they are given medicines that reduce fever, i.e. antipyretics. After treatment, it is important to prevent any further streptococcal infections, as this is a risk of recurrence of rheumatic fever and complications.
