Treatment of puerperal infections: drugs, antibiotics and more
Treatment depends on the specific type of infection.
It consists in the administration of antibiotics, drugs to reduce temperature and pain, and monitoring the woman's vital signs.
In the case of a local infection, antibiotics are given. Regular disinfection of the wound is necessary. In the case of an infection after perineal incision, subsequent cleaning of the wound with suturing of the site is carried out. Medication to reduce temperature and pain is also given.
Treatment of the vulva and vagina
It consists mainly in strict hygiene, administration of antibiotics, lavage, local disinfection with peroxide or betadine. Sedation baths are recommended. In case of deterioration, surgical treatment is necessary.
Endometritis
Antibiotics, temperature-lowering drugs and uterotonics (drugs to strengthen the activity of the uterine musculature) are administered.
Myometritis
Uterotonics, antibiotics, temperature-lowering drugs, ice packs applied locally to the abdomen. In some cases, surgical removal of the uterus is necessary if the condition worsens overall.
Parametritis
Antibiotics, infusion therapy, bed rest, ice applied locally to the abdomen.
Adnexitis
Antibiotic therapy, local ice on the abdomen, sufficient fluid intake. In some cases, corticosteroids are also administered.
Pelveoperitonitis
Antibiotics, bed rest, ice on the abdomen, infusion therapy, relatively surgical intervention to drain the Douglas space and remove pus or effusion.
Diffuse peritonitis
Requires intensive care in the intensive care unit. Vital signs are continuously monitored and infusion therapy is given.
Among the drugs, broad-spectrum antibiotics, antifungals are administered, and in severe inflammation, drainage and lavage of the abdominal cavity is performed.
Puerperal septic pelvic thrombophlebitis
After confirmation, antibiotics and heparin are administered. They serve to thin the blood and reduce the risk of blood clots.
Puerperal thrombophlebitis of the ovarian veins
Antibiotic treatment consists of the simultaneous administration of a combination of several antibiotics for 7-10 days with the administration of heparin to prevent blood clots.
The woman is monitored in the ICU. Her vital signs are continuously monitored, with regular blood checks. If the condition does not improve, surgical management is necessary.
