Treatment of pityriasis versicolor: Drugs, antifungals and topical treatment
The treatment of superficial mycoses mainly involves local therapy. Total treatment is used in cases of extensive involvement or in immunodeficient patients.
In the treatment of pityriasis versicolor, topical preparations in application form are used:
- shampoos
- solutions
- sprays
- creams
Of the drugs, antifungals are used:
- flutrimazole
- bifonazole
- clotrimazole
- ketoconazole
Disinfection of clothing and footwear is an important part of treatment. Disinfection of footwear should be carried out at least once a week. Clothing should be disinfected before washing.
The next step for successful treatment is proper skin care after showering/bathing. Care should be taken to dry the skin thoroughly to reduce the risk of fungal disease.
The most at risk areas are the skin folds and the area between the fingers. Soaps with a disinfectant effect should be used for hand washing.
