Measles treatment: medication? Isolation and lifestyle interventions

There is no specific treatment for the measles virus.

Antibiotics are ineffective in viral diseases and are only used in the case of bacterial superinfection, or as a prevention of secondary bacterial infection.

Symptomatic treatment, reduction of fever, pain relief and vitamin supplementation are important. It is important to have bed rest and to isolate patient.

In some cases, administrating human immunoglobulin G is an option, for example in immunocompromised people.

Treatment is adjusted based on the complications that occur.

Treatment also includes taking certain measures:

  • isolation of a sick person, a child
    • contact with other people allowed after 2 weeks of remission
  • bed rest
  • plenty of fluids
  • take vitamins
  • staying in a dark room in case of eye irritation
    • avoid direct light
  • humidification (humidifier or wet towels) - alleviates dry cough
  • fever reduction
  • cough suppressants
  • early detection of complications
