Treatment Esophagitis
Proper treatment depends on the cause.
If it is GERD, reflux needs to be addressed. With infection, drugs are given that are effective on the microorganism in question. Immunity is supported.
Lifestyle and dietary modifications are important, as well as weight loss.
An example is the restriction of foods that induce pyrosis. Prohibition of alcohol intake, restriction of smoking or exclusion of drugs that have negative effects. In case of intoxication, immediate professional examination and treatment is necessary.
Pharmacotherapy, i.e. taking medication, may include antifungals, antibiotics or antivirals. Alternatively, drugs to reduce stomach acid production, antacids, as well as proton pump inhibitors or prokinetics.
Surgical treatment is chosen in case of severe damage to the oesophagus or in more severe forms of GERD.
