How is leptospirosis treated and what drugs are used for leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is treated according to severity. Milder forms are treated mainly symptomatically.
Mild symptoms are treated at home. The following should be observed in treatment:
- rest
- drink plenty of fluids
- take medication to reduce temperature and pain
For more severe forms, antibiotics such as doxycycline, ampicillin, amoxicillin, azithromycin and penicillin are given for treatment.
In severe cases, hospitalization and administration of antibiotics directly into a vein is necessary.
If the bacteria spreads to other organs, further supportive treatment is needed. The goal of treatment is to ensure that the kidneys, lungs or other organs that could be damaged remain functional.
When the lungs are infected, artificial lung ventilation is sometimes necessary to support breathing.
If there is a risk of serious organ damage, plasmapheresis is performed to replace blood plasma.
