Rhinitis treatment: remedies for the common cold and getting rid of a stuffy nose early
In the case of allergic rhinitis, it is important to avoid exposure to the allergen. Of course, this is not always possible, as it is not easy to restrict movement in the outdoor environment during the pollen season.
In this case, pharmacological treatment is preferred by the administration of antihistamines, i.e. medications to reduce allergies. Medication to reduce the swelling of the mucous membranes is helpful, but only for the time specified by the manufacturer.
In the case of infectious rhinitis, the treatment of symptoms is preferred, mainly due to the numerous viral origins of the disease. Antibiotic treatment is not effective against viruses. Antibiotics are used only in the case of a bacterial agent.
Symptomatic treatment means using, for example, antipyretics against fever, mucus thinners and medicine to help manage excess mucus and coughing. They are especially useful when the cold causes nasal congestion. Nasal sprays are used to clear the nasal passage, which reduces the swelling.
Adequate fluid intake is important. This will thin and loosen the formation of mucus. In case of fever, it will ensure the prevention of dehydration, whichis especially important for children and the elderly. The same is true for vitamins that support treatment.
Home treatment or homeopathic treatment of rhinitis can help alleviate the symptoms. In most cases, however, home treatment has only a temporary effect, and the treatment will not be as fast as one would like to.
Steam inhalation can help. Various herbal decoctions are suitable. Herbal teas are good. Steam inhalation moisturizes the mucosa, helps the formation of mucus and the healing of the damaged mucosa. Also, lifestyle adjustments and an increased proportion of fruit and vegetables in the diet are good choices.

In small children, it is necessary to suck out the contents of the nose artificially, i.e. by using a specially designed suction pump. It is also possible to use various nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. The suitability of the product should be determined based on the age of the child.
Rhinitis during pregnancy and breastfeeding has its specifics, especially in the case of treatment. Emphasis is placed on the correct selection of suitable medication, since during pregnancy and breastfeeding, these substances may cross the placenta and go into the blood of the fetus or breast milk.
In the case of recurrence and chronic rhinitis, the cause may not be only viral, but also, for example, an anatomical defect in the nose, so sometimes surgery is needed.
However, the vast majority of cases of rhinitis have a viral origin and symptomatic treatment is enough to help alleviate the symptoms. The disease usually subsides within a week. In case of chronic rhinitis, the treatment lasts longer. Of course, if one is not sure whether the symptoms persist, an examination would be the best choice.
