Treatment of skin abscess: surgery, drugs, antibiotics + topical
The only effective way to remove a skin abscess is to surgically open the abscess. The pus is drained and the abscess cavity is flushed out. In some cases, patients are given a drain for 24 to 48 hours.
Antibiotics are used to treat the abscess:
- Clindamycin
- cephalexin
- doxycycline
- sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim
An ointment containing ichthamol, sodium perborate, calcium oxide and potassium aluminium sulphate is available on the market. It is used to treat purulent skin diseases, infected fungal diseases, frostbite, bedsores, incipient inflammation of the hair capsule and in pimples.
Another option for abscess treatment is an ointment containing neomycin and bacitracin. The drugs have a broad spectrum of action. This combination of drugs acts on most bacterial pathogens of skin diseases.
It is also recommended to apply local moist compresses. Immobilisation of the limb is also advisable.
