Treatment of reactive arthritis: medications, biological therapy and lifestyle changes

There are several methods of treatment. They are regimental measures, rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

Symptomatic pharmacological treatment is the basis for symptom management. It helps alleviate the difficulties that are bothersome of the afflicted pain.

The aim of the treatment is, in addition to alleviating the difficulties, also to reduce the inflammatory activity and to prevent the worsening of the condition and health complications. The reduction in immune activity cannot be neglected either.

The following medications are administered:

  • NSAID - nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, decrease inflammation and reduce pain
  • analgesics - reduce pain
  • corticoids - decrease inflammation
  • antibiotics, for the treatment of an underlying bacterial disease
  • DMARD - disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs
    • immunosuppressants - drugs that inhibit or prevent activity of the immune system
    • biological treatment
  • intra-articular injections - applied to the joint

Of course, regimental measures are also important.

In the acute stage, the affected joints should not put under a lot of load. However, in the long run, regular physical activity is necessary. Passivity, inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle have a negative impact.

It is important to optimise one's body weight to avoid being overweight and obese. The diet should be rational and balanced. Nutritional supplements that support the joints help.

One should not smoke and drink excessively. Care should be taken to maintain a high fat and salt intake.

Healthy dieting.

But physiotherapy and therapeutic gymnastics and exercise are also suitable. Supporting muscle strength helps joint and overall flexibility. Strengthening, occupational therapy, swimming, running, walking and other sports activities are added according to individual possibilities.

Think of sufficient and thorough treatment for infections and oral hygiene.
