Treatment: how is mumps treated? Poultices, remedies for manifestations, symptoms
Mumps is a viral disease for which antibiotics do not work. Treatment is therefore only symptomatic. It helps to relieve the discomfort during the course of the infection.
The body can deal with the virus on its own.
As symptomatic treatment, drugs for temperature (antipyretics) and pain (analgesics) are given. Thorough hydration of the patient is very important.
As a first aid for the pain of swollen parotid glands, lukewarm compresses are used.
In aseptic meningitis, the patient is admitted to an intensive care bed and given anti-edema treatment.
In orchitis, boys are dressed with special briefs or temporarily wear a jockstrap. Antibiotics are given as prophylaxis against secondary bacterial infection.
If the disease is complicated by pancreatitis, it is treated primarily with a pancreas-sparing diet.
In case of recurrent vomiting, intravenous rehydration is the first choice treatment, and in severe cases also parenteral infusion nutrition.
