Treatment of haemophilia: Medications for the replacement of blood clotting factors
The disease is not treatable. Hemophilia treatment is mainly substitution, which is the administration of a replacement and is lifelong. It is mainly based on the administration of replacement clotting factors into the blood, the factors being obtained from blood plasma donors. These factors can also be obtained artificially, and thus in the form of recombination, but so far this method is not very widespread.
Depending on the patient's condition and individual situation, the form and interval of administration are then chosen, most often by injection. The treatment also takes place at home. In addition, drugs that stop the redissolution of clotted blood may be given.
A short-term alternative is to administer DDAVP (1-DEAMINO-8-D-ARGININ VASOPRESSIN). DDAVP may increase blood coagulation factor levels in the brain for a short period of time by stimulation, but it is not a viable alternative to injection.
Prophylactic treatment is intended for children and for severe forms of hemophilia. Its task is to prevent complications of the disease. For example, joint and muscle damage. But also prevent life-threatening bleeding.
Part of the treatment is also regular monitoring of the patient's joints. When orthopedic examinations and X-ray examinations are performed and the condition of the joints, or their deformations, are regularly monitored. Rehabilitation is important. It is appropriate to be included in the care center for hemophiliacs. HTC - hemophilia treatment center or CCC, which is a comprehensive care center. In Slovakia, for example, treatment centers.
