Treatment of ovarian cysts depends on the type of cyst, its cause, size, age of the woman. From catching the cyst through monitoring to surgery.
Most of the cysts occurring in women of childbearing age are functional cysts. They resolve naturally within 3 months, although they may cause complications.
If the cyst does not rupture or causes bleeding, surgical treatment is necessary.
Treatment may consist of administering medications that shrink the cyst, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and painkillers.
When cysts recur, birth control pills are given to prevent ovulation and the formation of new cysts.
When cancer is suspected, laparoscopy is often performed to remove the cysts.
Surgical removal involves removing the cyst through an incision and taking a sample for biopsy to rule out cancer.
