Cataract treatment: correction with lenses, glasses and surgery

If glasses are no longer enough to correct visual acuity, treatment is in order.

= Surgery. The latter is the only curative method. There is no other therapy for cataracts.

However, there is nothing to worry about. It is a procedure that takes place while you are conscious, while the eye is numb. It is simple and takes a short time.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures worldwide.

In the past, the "wait-and-see tactic" was also chosen, where one waited for a higher stage in the course of the disease.

However, nowadays, early restoration of visual acuity is important and preferred. And it is up to the individual to make the decision to undergo surgery.

A mild ongoing disease, therefore, does not immediately negate surgery. The cataract does not damage other structures of the eye.

But if there are enough reasons, there is no reason to wait.

So, if glaucoma interferes with quality of life and the ability to carry out normal daily activities...

Even late stages can be operated on, however, early resolution usually means a better recovery.

During surgery, the following happens:

  1. small millimetre cut of the lens, for access to the inside of the lens
  2. removal of cloudy lens
  3. insertion of an artificial lens that is adapted to the needs of a person
  4. the new lens is placed in the same location
  5. remains part of the eye
  6. the whole procedure takes only a few tens of minutes

The operation is safe. But even so, it is necessary to evaluate associated diseases and risks before the procedure. In some cases, the cataract is removed and the vision is corrected with glasses or contact lenses.

As with other procedures, there is a risk of infection.

If both eyes require this solution. It is operated on gradually, after the healing of the first one.

Recovery includes, for example:

  • swimming, strength and contact sports are forbidden for about a month after surgery, as well as excessive carrying of heavy loads
  • two to three weeks after surgery, special eye drops are applied
  • normal work activities and unrestricted movement are not restricted
  • after a month, a return to normal life is usually possible

After the surgery, there is no risk of cataracts returning. Which ensured the removal of the lens and implantation of an artificial one. So there is no need to worry about recurrence.

Medication for cataracts? There are none, just like there are no natural, homemade recipes or grandma's advice, herbs, homeopathy and other procedures.

Prevention is important...

Prevention includes some general measures:

  • regular eye examinations
  • healthy lifestyle, i.e. not smoking, not drinking alcohol
  • a healthy diet, plenty of vegetables and fruit for the supply of vitamins, especially A, C and E, antioxidants
  • wearing sunglasses, eye protection
