How is astigmatism treated? Glasses, lenses, laser...
Treatment can be based on several procedures. Certainly, it depends on the degree and form of the eye defect.
The aim is to improve visual acuity and visual clarity.
An example of the simplest method is vision correction with glasses. However, this is not a treatment, rather an adjustment of the refraction of light rays so that they fall on the required area of the retina. What in return adjusts visual acuity.
Nevertheless, in no case does it address the cause. Glasses, although a relatively inexpensive choice, will not help with more severe forms of astigmatism. Furthermore, they may break or we may lose them.
+ By time, it is likely that they will need to be replaced, the frame and the glass for dioptry adjustment.
Another solution is to apply contact lenses. These bring with them several possible complications. An example is more complex care to prevent inflammation of the eye. In addition, contact lenses may not suit everyone.
Such additional lenses, and thus the optical elements, interfere with the refraction of light. They correct the astigmatic error of the cornea, or less often the lens.
As a solution is used a cylindrical diopter, a toric lens. It balances and corrects the curvature in several planes.
Refractive surgery ...
Another option may be laser surgery (LASIK, LASEK, PRK and others).
Nowadays, it is a relatively affordable, simple and yet successful solution. In addition to astigmatism, the laser resolves other associated refractive errors.
In this case, the laser is highly recommended. Even in the case of cataracts and presbyopia, which occurs after the age of 45 (may even earlier).
Of course, a specific approach to the solution is suggested by a specialist doctor.
- Cataract: What are the symptoms, how is it treated?
- Glaucoma or cataracts: What are its causes, symptoms and treatment?
Except of the laser, intraocular surgery is also available. They are used in more severe stages and in the progression of the condition
Thus, an example of an invasive procedure is the corneal incision LRI and the implantation of toric lenses.
However, as with other invasive procedures, these have their potential risks and complications. And the price of performance also remains an issue.
Prevention: Is it important?
It certainly is, as with other aspects of health, we should take care of our eyesight.
An example is:
- eye gymnastics - simple exercises, especially for eye fatigue and longer work in front of the PC
- healthy lifestyle, vegetables and fruits
- sufficient exercise
- drinking regime
- plenty of relaxation and sleep
- nutritional supplements and especially enough vitamin A, hyaluronic acid or collagen and others will also help
- eyedrops in dry eyes
- avoid dusty environments and use caution when heating
- avoid smoking and alcohol
- accident prevention (at home and at work, especially during risky activities, eye protection, etc.)
